Website Hosting Frequently Asked Questions

What is a domain name?
A domain is a unique name that appears after the @ sign-in email addresses, and after www. in web addresses. It typically takes the form of your organization’s name and a standard Internet suffix, such as yourbusiness.co.za or yourbusiness.com
What kind of domain extension do I need?
You can only register domain names that are still available and not yet registered. Different extension (e.g. .co.za, .com) are available at different prices. In South Africa we use mostly .co.za, .com and .info domain extensions. If a domain is thus not available to be registered as a .co.za, meaning it’s already registered by someone else, we can do a search to see if it’s available as a .info
Who is the legal owner of a domain?

Technically domains are never owned but leased from a registry on an annual basis, giving the registrant the legal right to use the domain. Your details will be submitted as the registrant so you will thus be the legal owner.

How long does it take to register a domain name?
The registration of a domain name varies depending on the namespace in which the domain is intended for registration.

Given that all the information provided is correct, COZA (.co.za) domain names typically take 24 hours for the domain name registration, and furthermore, up to a maximum of 72 hours for the DNS Servers (Domain Name Servers) to replicate worldwide.

Registration of .com, .net, .org, etc typically takes anywhere from 24 to 72 hours for the registration process, and within this process, the DNS replicate worldwide.

How do I transfer my domain name?
Contact us with the domain name/information that you which to transfer, we will do the setup on our server and prepare for the transfer. The domain transfer ticket will be submitted as soon as all is in order (emails, website backup etc.). The domain transfer can take between 2 and 48 hours to propagate after which you’ll be able to use your emails and restore your website. We can assist with the email setup and website transfer at an additional fee.
How often do I have to renew a domain name?
You need to renew your domain name once a year to keep it active. We will remind you to do that before your domain name expires. The consequences of letting a domain name expire could be significant depending on how your business uses its website.
What happens if I don't renew my domain?

Approximately 30 days before the domain expiration date, you will start receiving notifications to you by email to the email address you listed with us.

You will receive at least two reminders before the expiration date and one reminder within five days after expiration.

If we are unable to secure payment on or before the domain renewal date, your domain name will expire.

As early as one day after the expiration, your domain name will be deactivated and replaced with a parking page indicating the domain name has expired, and other services you have associated with the domain name may no longer function.

As early as 30 days after expiration, your domain name may be purchased by a third party.

If a third party purchases the domain name during this time, the domain name will not be available for you to renew.

If the domain name has not been renewed by you or purchased by a third party, an expired domain name enters the registry redemption period (as defined by each registry) approximately 45 days following expiration.

If a third party purchases the domain name prior to the registry redemption period, the domain name will not enter redemption and will not be available for you to renew.

How do I change a domain name once it’s been registered?
Once a domain name has been registered with the registrar, it cannot be changed.
